Discussion:
Forrest, A Closet Gay Guy?

The more I look over season 4, the more convinced I get that Forrest
was gay. Oh, he talked about girls but did we ever see one with him?
And he always was bitching about Riley's interest in Buffy. Then of
course when Adam turns him into a walking-talking Forrest doll, he
really has a mad on for Buffy who actually never did anything to him
that I can recall. I think the boy was jealous of Buffy and secretly
wanted Riley for himself. Anybody else get the same feeling?

Given Forrest's condition at the end of Season 4, I'm guessing that he was
kind of still in the closet during Seasons 6-7, the spare body parts closet
from the salvage of the Initiative, to be precise... On a TV show that
moved as fast as Buffy did, I'm guessing that nobody prior to this thread
has ever wondered one way or the other about Forrest's sexual orientation,
social life outside of the Initiative, or anything else.... at least I've
never thought about it.... and I don't see that there were ever any hints
that the writers meant us to think about it....

You know, I suppose people just see whatever they want to see. The October
2, 2002, quote: "Well, he did have Riley -- who also had a gay thing going
on with Forrest in season four -- for a while" is proof positive. If Riley
Finn "had a gay thing going on with Forrest", one has to congratulate him on
his extreme discretion---I mean, they BOTH must have gotten A+++ with
honorable mention in the "Covert Ops" class referred to, I think, in
WTWTA......
Far-fetched speculations can be fun, but they remain far-fetched.
In a social theory class I had back in graduate school, we had to
read some Nazi era criticism in German, just to hammer in and appreciate
this point. Even though the Germans were aligned with the Italians in the
Axis, the Germans were still supposed to be totally superior in every way to
everyone else, especially darker folks, even if those darker folks happened
to be allied members of the Axis. So one Nazi literary historian/racial
theorist was going on about how all the great literature in European history
was actually written by Germans. Now, even as baseline subnormal idiocy
goes, this was a stretch (but Shakespeare and all the English writers were
actually Germans and the French writers weren't really that good except for
the mediaeval grail writers such as Chrétien de Troyes who was obviously
German because he was writing about the Holy Grail...?!?!?).
However, devoted as he was the Fuhrer und Reich, the theorist in
question (who's name I have mercifully forgotten), recognized two gigantic
flaws in his theory/holes in his data: Dante Alighieri and Miguel de
Cervantes.
The theorist went on to an analysis that began by correctly stating
Alighieri is an extremely rare and otherwise unattested Italian name (at
least otherwise unattested in Mediaeval Florence/Tuscany). Moreover,
"Alighieri" is a name that doesn't even fit the normal Italian
morpho-phonemic patterns of names, so it must be a foreign name (and of
course, it could only have been German in origin because the Germans were
the most common foreigners in Italy, which is actually statistically
verifiable, and related to the whole "Holy Roman Empire" concept of a
pseudo-free trade zone), while "Dante" itself was a fairly rare Christian
name in Italy (no easily identifiable Latin OR ecclesiastical antecedents,
for instance) and so was not common among Italians until popularized by the
famous poet's vast reputation. So it obviously followed that Alighieri was
actually a German name, to wit the Italicized version of Aldeiger, while
"Dante" was actually "Durant", hence the greatest poet of Mediaeval Italy
was actually a German, q.e.d. theory of Teutonic superiority in European
literature saved: "Durant Aldeiger" wrote the Divine Comedy.
(First we can all barf) And then turn to his analysis of Miguel de
Cervantes, whose extremely Hispanic surname by similar "logic" turns out
actually to be a German nickname "Zer Fantes" (means something like "extreme
fop, cockscomb") which fit the character and reputation of the poet
adequately---"good enough for government work" as it were...
So, you see, you can make any theory work out if you really try
hard....But I don't think there's a hairsbreadth of a chance that the actor
playing Forrest thought his character was gay....much less any indication in
the script....and as much as the Nazis wanted to believe that Dante
Alighieri and Miguel de Cervantes were both Germans....they were both
probably just Gay members of the Initiative or else gay friends of Larry &
Xander (or Andrew) who liked Seasons VI-VII.....

Oh peachy....you need to cool your jets girl. I used the descriptive
sword of flesh because I didn't want to just be crass and say, "
erection or hard-on ".
It's just not....poetic enough.
It's a QUESTION. That's all. Do you THINK MAGGIE WANTED RILEY'S
LOVE-WAND OR NOT ?
I didn't need your witless comment about me getting laid.
So uncouth of you.
What...are you an older woman type hoping to be flirty and gain my
interest. HOPE NOT.
You even bringing up " getting laid " is VERY TELLING about whom needs
to get laid darling.
Good luck.

wanting to have sex with Riley, and I brought up getting laid?

Let's try and bring even more reality into this. I don't think Forrest
was gay in the show. He wasn't the only one who blamed Buffy for
turning Riley against the initiative. Of course, the first person to
do that was Maggie, and she died. Forrest was just the most vocal
about it, he's always been the most vocal of the Initiative characters.

His opinion of Buffy soured all the more when he met FAITH IN BUFFY'S
BODY who he perceived as Buffy selfishly taking his injured leader for
a roll in the hay without consideration for if the wound might open up
again, as well as having more interest in herself than what her affair
with Riley was meaning for his career. A great many unpleasantnesses
can be traced back to Faith playing Buffy, including Spike's mistaken
belief that Buffy lusted after him.

I have to agree that the writers probably never intended such a
backstory for Forrest. We know they are perfectly willing to tease the
audience, though. Fans are fans, and those wanting slash will invent
it even when there's not even the vaguest indication of it.

Please -- who wants slash with Forest OR Riley. They were both totally
unattractive. Slash is for hotties like Angel and Spike who had some major
erotic tension going on (of course, JM has chemistry with everyone, but
still).
